The Numeyrieh is a village part of the Chkeef region, possessing many historical and geographical importance.
The name of this village comes from an ancient account during the Saab family reign. This powerful and wealthy family controlled the entire Chkeef district, ruling many villages including Numeyrieh. The Saab family named it Numeyrieh because of the fresh and pure source of water found in this village.
Today, the Numeyrieh is part of the Nabatieh county being only 13 kilometers distant from its city center. The Numeyrieh is 60 kilometers away from the capital city of Beirut. This village unlike many other mountainous southern villages in Lebanon, has an altitude of only 350-400 meters. This village spreads across a beautiful mountain, with a surface of about 7 kilometers square.
The Numeyrieh’s periphery is bordered with many similar villages including: Sharkieh in the South, Zifta in the North, Kawtharieh in the West, and Deir El Zahrani in the East.
Our village contains four major mountains and many hills that compose the entire Numeyrieh. The oldest of these four mountains contains the village’s first mosque and City Hall. The second mountain known as the A’reed holds the first water tower or Hawooz in Arabic. The third mountain known as the Ghabrah has been undergoing many construction recently, including a new water tower, restoration of the sewer system, and expansion and reconstruction of roads. The final mountain known as Russ is the village’s environmental area carrying many trees.
After the end of Lebanon’s brutal civil war, this village like many others in the southern region experienced an overwhelming increase in reconstruction of homes. An estimated 50% of the building and renovation of Numeyrieh came after 1990, especially after the Israeli withdrawal of the South in 2000 due to the resistance of the moukawama.
Numeyireh is home to one of the oldest religion school dating back to over 200 hundred years. The mosque in the village is approximately 250 years old, it is also one of the most crucial artifacts the Numeyrieh possess.
